BBC Jam Cams using Ordnance Survey Maps

BBC Website using Ordnance Survey Maps

"View our Jam Cams by using our new interactive map"

BBC Ordnance Survey Maps Jam Cams

The map is dynamic (generated in flash) and shows clusters, the larger the circle the more cameras are available to view.

Quick Video showing the Ordnance Survey 1.1million (Miniscale) 1:250,000 & 1:50,000 Colour Rasters in thier flash application.

Now you would think nothing of this, until you realise the cost for this.
A Corporate Licence. It must be very expensive to do this.

[Now in the UK every household that has a TV tuner requires a TV Licence, now that can be seen as a 'tax'. This tax then is used to fund the BBC and all it's programme making and anything to do with the BBC. Including the very successful iPlayer.]

It's nice to see this data finally and freely accessible on a very large UK website other than the Ordnance Survey's own site.

Though if you are looking for Free Access to Ordnance Survey data and the use of these products mentioned you can provided you have no adverts on your site or making money via the access of the data. OpenSpace API is the route for you.

BBC Correspondents Map (v4.0)

update: 02/02/2008
The BBC Correspondents Map gets an Official blog post from Google Lat/Long
http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2008/02/
all-news-thats-fit-to-map.html

1 February 2008 [v4.0]

  • Moved up to new version - with shiny new photos and RSS links to the latest three articles on the BBC News website. Enjoy!

31 January 2008 [v3.2]

  • Fixed layout bug in Firefox - thanks to it being entirely developed on BBC computers (and therefore in non-compliant Internet Explorer 6), it didn't display in browsers which are standards-compliant. This issue has now been fixed.
  • Design change to move the black bar to the top of the page instead of the bottom.

30 January 2008 [v3.1]

  • Fixed bug where correspondents based in bureaux were not displayed in the list.

30 January 2008 [v3.0]

  • Changed info bubbles to tabs - one for each correspondent - in preparation for future features.
  • Added links to BBC News search in order to find stories from the city, country and correspondent.

update: 31/01/2008
The BBC has taken a liking to this site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/01/
bbc_reporters_mashed.html

"For more great news and maps mash-ups, take a look at this blog."
blog post by Darren Waters

Mapperz hopes that the BBC takes this on, as Geo-Spatial content is and will be a powerful media representation for BBC News.
maybe add latitude and longitude to RSS feed to get GeoRSS - http://www.georss.org
google already support this functionality

Kent 'at-risk' Post Office Outlets Mapped

"The Post Office has announced the first 180 branches earmarked for closure under its plan to shut 2,500 by the end of next year."

based on the pdf on the BBC website - Mapperz mapped them. In 15 minutes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7023244.stm

How was this done so quick?

  • Copy and pasted addresses and postcodes from the PDF into notepad, save as .txt
  • Rename as .csv
  • Open this in OpenOffice (or Word) as comma delimited.
  • Adjusted the Postcodes into one column
  • Appended the lat/lng to the Post Office 'at risk' in OpenOffice
  • Saved as .xls
  • Published this as 'public' (will not work if your don't)
*to create the link between the spreadsheet and google map via the Public Spreadsheet Key.
**the wizard does do a lot of things, icons sizes, colours, viewport, map extent based on data.
The Mapperz modified a little html to make the map centre on Europe before zooming to the Kent era.

View the 'At Risk' Post Offices in Kent Map

Mismatched postcodes with the geocoder
Kent had one Postcode that was incorrect replacing the 'I' for a '1' worked.
TN13 IHZ should be TN13 1HZ

Mission accomplished - Long Way Down

Mission accomplished - The Long Way Down (there is a Map)

"Long Way Down is the most recent motorbike adventure with Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. Leaving on 12 May 2007, they travelled through Europe, and then Africa – from Tunisia to South Africa, via countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia - a total of 15,000 miles. The team arrived in Cape Town, South Africa on 4 August 2007. It is a follow-up to the Long Way Round trip in 2004, where the pair rode their motorbikes from London to New York, travelling east across Europe, Russia and the United States. As on Long Way Round, they were accompanied by Executive Producers/Directors Russ Malkin and David Alexanian."

Map 24 Supports GeoRSS Feeds

Map 24 now supports GeoRSS feeds

Map24 GeoRSS Feeds

"GeoRSS in general is a technology for distributing news feeds with corresponding location attributes among a great variety of clients. Geographically encoded news feeds may be organized thematically in channels and visualized in web mapping solutions like Map24 Portal. Since GeoRSS is evaluated by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), it is a prospective standard in the geospatial domain."

A large amount of Weather GeoRSS feeds are now available from the BBC Weather Service.
search a region or enter a city (any large city in the world will have a feed)
copy the link (.xml) from clicking the
Weather RSS Feeds View Feed for this Location
http://feeds.bbc.co.uk/weather/feeds/rss/5day/id/3366.xml (London Bridge, UK)
paste into the Maps24 demo.
