The Project
"The goal for this project is to launch an High Altitude Balloon (HAB) with a computer probe to near space in Portugal. The Helium filled Balloon will go as high as 30.000 meters (that's about 100.000 feet), to the stratosphere, then explodes and the probe falls with a parachute and is recovered on earth."

Scheduled for launching the Balloon on 30th of May, 2010 at Castro Verde, Portugal.

Due to a volcano in Iceland the Eyjafjallajokull (pronounced "ay-yah-

FYAH'-plah-yer-kuh-duhl") glacier is producing a huge cloud at high altitude of ash that is covering large areas of Northern Europe restricting air travel.

"Radar is a remote sensing tool used by weather forecasters to analyse the extent and intensity of precipitation. Radar detects objects by transmitting radio waves which are reflected back to the starting point by any object they encounter. Distance can be calculated using the speed of the radio waves and the amount of time that each pulse takes to reach the object and return back to the starting point. Rain, snow and hail all stop the radio waves. The more pulses that are reflected back, the greater the intensity of the precipitation."

Interactive Travel Map - this is information overlaid on to Google Maps showing live information from http://www.networkwestmidlands.co.uk/

The Interactive Live Map shows:

• Bus stops (real time bus timetables, where available) rail stations (train departure and arrival times) and Metro stops.
• See forthcoming departures (live for rail and bus)
• Link through to full timetables relevant for each station and stop

Finally Microsoft have made Birds Eye View available on a Mobile Platform - Windows Mobile 6.


Available in the Menu and Bird's Eye Mode option
*Bird's Eye View is not available everywhere - though most large cities in the USA/Canada/Europe/Australia regions will have Birds Eye oblique aerial photographs.

Hopefully soon this will be made available to all other platforms.

BBC Olympic and Paralympic Heroes Parade Map
(A BBC first to report a live event using mapping tools)


BBC has created a map showing the route of the parade using the Microsoft Virtual Earth API.
The line on the map marks the route the parade will take, from Mansion House to Trafalgar Square.

The procession leaves Mansion House at 1100 BST (so the map will hopefully be updating shortly after that time)

Ollie Williams created this map with the intention for people who cannot attend the parade and will be uploading images live from the parade so the map will have more content during today.

"If you're not going, you can use the map to follow instant photo and text updates from points along the route."

"It's clever stuff, and it allows us to tell the story of events in a complex, live, graphic environment for the first time."

A mobile phone camera with built in GPS and Flickr and ShoZu websites will be used.

Major improvements in traffic and driving directions includes

• directions with either the start or the finished directions compressed.

• another directions improvement is a traffic re-director based on real-time traffic data.

• one click directions if you are inviting others to an event,supports multiple starting points

• 1-click directions will show directions from the North, South, East, and West

3D Improvements

• incorporating Birds Eye photography pictures directly into the 3D map

• a new way to create 3D collections that "flyover" of collection points

The AA Travel Planner is more effective than any of the above in the UK. The driving times are more accurate and the congestion travel information is more up-to-date.
