Yahoo! Internet Location Platform (New Geocoder)

Yahoo! Internet Location Platform (New Geocoder) New!

"The Yahoo! Internet Location Platform provides a resource for managing all geo-permanent named places on Earth. The purpose in creating the Internet Location Platform is to provide the Yahoo! Geographic Developer Community with the vocabulary and grammar to describe the world's geography in an unequivocal, permanent, and language-neutral manner.

The Internet Location Platform is designed to facilitate spatial interoperability and geographic discovery; users can traverse the spatial hierarchy, identify the geography relevant to their users and their business, and in turn, unambiguously geotag, geotarget, and geolocate data across the Web."

Basically this is a Geocoder for Places across the World. The accuracy is fairly precise and the easy to understand.

Here is an example:
http://where.yahooapis.com/v1/places.q('10%20downing%20street%20london%20uk')

and also you can geocode UK Postcodes - full UK Postcodes!

Geeky Stuff

"In simple terms, the Service allows you to look up the unique identifier - called the Where on Earth ID, or WOEID - for almost any named place on the Earth; it also allows you to resolve a WOEID you have received from a third party - such as Fire Eagle™ or Upcoming - to the place it represents.

The API is accessed via HTTP GET; the following examples can be cut-and-paste into a web browser to view the results:"

Yahoo! MapMixer + Quick User Guide

Yahoo! MapMixer + Quick User Guide

What is MapMixer? "The world is a big place. There are thousands of maps out there that provide unique details about any given destination. MapMixer is a new site that combines those maps with Yahoo! Maps to give you a better view of the world. It's easy to mix your own map. Upload an image of your map, use our layering tool to align it with Yahoo! Maps and we'll do the rest! Your map will have all the features of Yahoo! Maps (zooming, panning). You can also syndicate it on your own site or blog."

Quick user guide
Sign in to Yahoo.
Upload your jpeg,gif or bmp.
(no tif support at present.)

Yahoo Map Mixer Georeference Point
Two Points are needed to estimate the geographical position of the image.
Traditionally in a GIS environment this is at least 3 points.

*Top Tip - use the opacity setting

Yahoo MapMixer Georeferenced Opacity Setting
Use the control points on the edges of the image. Yahoo Mapmixer allows you to unpin your image which enables the moving of the yahoo map base

Yahoo MapMixer Georeferenced Rotate Image
Use the green circle to rotate the image - this helps to get an exact fit of the image.
*rotated image exaggerated here for example of the function.

Map Seeaarch - but who wins?

Seeaarch is a quick fire, map and directions search website that uses 4 mapping solutions

Map Searches
  • Yahoo
  • Google
  • Live
Directions
  • Yahoo
  • Google
  • Mapquest
Though a quick test reveals a clear winner.

Seeaarch Results - Winner
note: moving the columns is possible to show each one more clearly.

Yahoo gets confused but tries (finds an American route)
Google does the job - as you would expect
Mapquest failed to find the start location

Mapperz requests directions from
10 Downing St, Westminister, London, UK
to SW19 1AR (Wimbledon)

So there a quick and effective test.
(So why not just use Google Directions?)

When Planning a route, whether it is in the UK, Europe or any other part of the world, don't just rely on one solution.
The AA Travel Planner is more effective than any of the above in the UK. The driving times are more accurate and the congestion travel information is more up-to-date.
For Europe try Yahoo Maps

Yahoo Local UK Changes

Yahoo Local UK and Ireland Changes Mapping

Yahoo Local Map Static Yahoo Local Map Dynamic

Now uses Map24 to search locally

The maps are available either in a Static or Dynamic Mode. Search radius can be applied in static mode. Carefully with Firefox in dynamic mode as panning can cause firefox to close without warning (a map24 api bug?).

Mapstraction Goes Testing

A One Stop Testing of all three Mapping API's Google, Yahoo and Microsoft
Mapstraction goes into Testing - Mapping API

Mapstraction is a library which provides a common API for Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft's javascript mapping APIs to enable switching from one to another as smoothly as possible. The aim of Mapstraction in mainly to protect companies building commercial products on top of Google Maps from changes to terms and conditions, the introduction of ads, or the emergence of a competing library with better maps, different imagery or preferable licensing terms.

It's in early development at present, so this is alpha.

Looks as it needs a little attention so sites provide more functionality but this seems to be bringing the coding side together. Looks promising, updates here when and how.

This site communicates with Google maps version 2, Yahoo maps version 3 and Virtual Earth version 2 (version 3 soon).

A similar site was blogged by mapperz called rockstarapps.com

Compare Microsoft, Yahoo and Google Maps

Compare Microsoft, Yahoo and Google Maps on one Webpage

"Map Compare allows you to evaulate which mapping technologies is best. All three maps are locked together so panning, zooming and changing map types will effect all maps the same. You can also use the tab pane to try out various map features like; markers, popups as well. "

Compare Virtual Earth, Google, Yahoo Maps

Best Maps - Google (Carographically)
Best Aerial/Satellite - Virtual Earth (Higher Resolution more UK coverage)
Best Geocoder - Yahoo (percentage match returned but Live Local does Geocode UK addresses)

So a Mashup of Google Maps, Virtual Earth Aerial view and Yahoo Geocoding would be the ideal solution.

Nearest found is Flash Earth where is it easy to switch layers between mapping sources.
Does not support geocoding as yet.
