Main Sources of Air Pollution
- Air quality and emissions
Find out how air quality has changed over time, and how emissions of different substances impact on the environment and health. - Air pollution incidents
In 2005 154 pollution incidents had a serious impact on air quality in England and Wales, the lowest number on record. - Acid rain
Acid rain has been tackled for over a decade with some success. - Ozone depletion
Ozone in the upper atmosphere shields the earth from harmful ultra violet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun. Man-made chemicals have damaged this “ozone layer”, allowing more UV radiation to pass through.
Other Sources of Pollution
- Pollution incidents - Pollution incidents such as oil spills or the accidental release of raw sewage can damage the environment, harm wildlife and pose a threat to human health.
- Ozone depletion- Ozone in the upper atmosphere shields the earth from harmful ultra violet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun. Man-made chemicals have damaged this “ozone layer”, allowing more UV radiation to pass through.
- Acid rain - Acid rain has been tackled for over a decade with some success
- Noise - Noise from industry, traffic and homes can annoy, disturb sleep and affect health.
- Light pollution - Light pollution has reduced our ability to view the night sky and causes impacts on wildlife. England is more brightly lit than other European country with the exception of the Netherlands.
- Environmental Crime - Illegal activities can directly harm wildlife or the environment. This section covers breaches of permits and fly tipping.
- Nutrients in rivers, lakes and coastal waters - Nutrients are essential for aquatic life, but high levels can upset ecosystems, create unsightly algal blooms and even threaten our health.
- Fertilisers - Fertilisers must be used with care to avoid pollution.
- Pesticides
And they still deal with flooding. But check your local area - the data and mapping for flooding is a little dated in places.
Comparing Environment Agency 'Mapping' (not data) with OnOneMap
Users prefer ease of use with OnOneMap.

what do u mean by a little dated?
im a contractor that deals with providing agency with a lot of their flood zone data - a lot of it is derived from model outputs.
The flood data is fine but compare the Environment Agency to OnOneMap.
(screen shot added to post)
Which is easier to use?
Which provides better visualisation to potential properties with information on the surrounding areas (buyers like this).
Use Google's AJAX method for easy panning and zooming without refreshing the page. (Increases the user experience)
So dated it is.

Never seen that site, very nice.
The thing is, The Agency is Public Government Agency - they do have some good GIS staff but the majority of the higher skilled ones move onto Consultancy due to ££. Saying that, this is a perfect Business Development idea for me to take forward in developing them something with a Google map backbone.
Another thing is, they Agency dont actually want people to be able to pinpoint their house in relation to the floodzone - this will lead onto a number of problems. If you used google, zoom restrictions and maps only would have to be put in place id imagine.
Thought I may be able to give you some information on What's In Your BackYard and the floodmap - We are making a move to panning on the map but this takes time due to development restrictions, so hopefully in a couple of months these feature will be available.
The Floodmap data and mapping is updated every three months on the Environment Agency site and as OnOneMap do not have a license to use the Environment Agency's floodmap data it is not kept current.
Thanks for the comments, look forward to the new mapping.
The Mapping Technologies now available are very useful for portraying what is 'near' us.
AJAX Mapping is recommend.
